How to destroy used flags?
How to destroy used flags?
Like any object, a flag gets dirty, deteriorates, time always ends up winning the day over this precious one. The image that no one wants to see is an old flag in a trash can or thrown away haphazardly! We suggest burning your old flags in complete confidentiality and respect for these emblems that we all cherish. If you have a flag that is not in the best of shape, it may be time to refresh your memory on the proper way to dispose of it. For example, the United States Flag Code (4 USC Sec 8 Para (k) Amended July 7, 1976) states: The flag, when in such condition that it is no longer a suitable emblem for display, shall be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by fire. Burning, however, is not the only way to dispose of a flag. Here are some suggestions for disposing of your worn or damaged flag with the respect it deserves.
1. According to Veterans of Foreign Wars, the first thing you should do is fold your flag properly. If you are unsure how to fold a flag, you can get step-by-step instructions here. Once you have folded your flag properly, build a fire large enough for your flag to burn completely. When the fire is ready, respectfully place your folded flag in it. If you wish, you can observe a moment of silence or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Once the flag is completely burned, the fire should be extinguished completely and safely. Collect the ashes and then bury them.
2. According to American Disposal Services, the proper way to bury your flag is to first fold it and then place it in a dignified box. You can then bury the flag, saying a few words if you wish.
3. If you are concerned about not burning or burying your flag properly, you can donate it to your local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Each of these government organizations will hold a ceremony to properly dispose of the flag and they will do it for free.
PS: Section 8j of the United States Flag Code states: "The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living being." Once you have determined that your flag is no longer in good condition, it should be disposed of respectfully.
